Best Colours To Keep You Looking Younger (2024)

Best colours to keep you looking younger. I was getting my hair done the other day and my stylist and I started discussing hair colour and how it works with our skin tone. In recent years I’ve stopped dying my hair a blue-black and softened it to a very dark brown, one shade below black. While I still love the intensity of my other colour, it was starting to look too harsh. Of course, I still wear black clothing all the time, but I’ve definitely noticed how much brighter my complexion looks when I add a little bit of colour near my face. It was no different when I bought my latest hat (a fisherman’s cap in case you wanted to know), but rather than black I opted for a dark navy because it had a bigger contrast with my hair and gave my look more dimension.

It’s not just about black though. I know you thought it was just that simple, but hear me out because it’s not complicated. It is, however, about making small adjustments to the colours you choose so that you can highlight your best features.

This isn’t about wearing or not wearing whatever you want because you are welcome to do whatever you like, but it’s more about not ageing yourself. I’m of the firm belief that no one wants to intentionally look older than they are.

Black. Okay, let’s just get this one out of the way first. Not all black shades are created equal. It can be faded or it can lean toward a grey, graphite or it can be a deep true black, the latter being the harshest of the three. Where a deep black can highlight your fine lines or the circles under your eyes try a softer shade which will still be black but not as harsh.

If you absolutely have to wear it near your face then soften your makeup and add a flattering blush to give your face more colour.

Turquoise. This is a great colour, that goes with every skin tone and every age. One small tip, if you aren’t sure about the best shade for you, simply match it to the veins in your arms. My skin is quite pale and my veins are are more green so I simply reach for a greener shade of turquoise. If yours are bluer then that’s the shade you should be looking for. For those with a more medium skin tone, any shade will do.

Neutrals. Like black, which gets its own category, other neutrals can either brighten or dull your complexion. You might look fabulous in crisp white or it might start washing your out and in that case you will need to reach for a cream or beige. On that note, a neutral grey will look great on pretty much everyone.

Red. You’ll always be safe when reaching for a primary red. Nothing more needs to be said, find a true red and wear it with pride.

Pink. This is the colour of youth, but if you have very pale skin then a soft pastel shade might not be the best choice. Instead, brighten the colour by reaching for a red-violet tone. A jewel toned magenta, raspberry or fuschia will all be great for

Lavender-Blue. This probably isn’t my favourite colour to wear, but if you like soft blue-violet shades then a periwinkle will also make you look more youthful.
