Important note about Console Warranties

I have been looking into purchasing a new Xbox 360 so I can snag a Falcon chip. However, this time around I was thinking of buying it from Best Buy or Circuit City so I could get the additional warranty. Here is the low-down:

Best Buy
2 Year Product Replacement Plan
$59.99 Arcade & Pro Versions
$79.99 Elite
- With this warranty you get a

1 TIME

replacement. After that they send it to their repair shop to fix it.
- You can renew your plan after the 2 years is up for the same price. But if you have already had the console replaced in the first 2 years, you still cannot get it replaced again.

Circuit City
2 Year Replacement Plan
$69.99 for standard warranty
$99.99 for warranty + accidental damage
- If you bring your console in for a replacement, your warranty

completely expires on that day

. You have to purchase another warranty if you still want your console covered.
- However, if you just have them fix the console, the warranty is still good through its initial expiration date.

---------------

Comments
With the 3 year warranty that Microsoft is offering on these, it seems like a huge waste of money to bother with getting an additional warranty (if you are willing to wait 3 - 4 weeks to get your console back).

the circuit city replacement plan doesn't sound too different than how I did with best buy. I took mine back 3 times. Everytime I took back I got back what I paid for the system and pro-rate on my replacement plan in store credit. Then I take that buy a new system and the replacement plan again. I pay what ever the difference is.

In fact I actually made out to my original purchase. because the elite dropped price between when I bought it and when I took back and get another elite. And the new elite came with 2 free games.

Most store warranties are a waste of money. Most companies already offer 1/2 year warranties on their product.

This is how the stores make their money.

Example... I just bought a new wireless router from BestBuy for $60 and the guy wanted me to buy a warranty on it for another $20... as if..

It's not a waste of money when M$ sends you back a refurb (after about 3 month wait) machine as appose to going to the store and getting a brand new as an replacement.

Fran I have to correct you on the Best Buy or at least give you info on what told to me over the phone. You can also buy more warranty on the replacement console.

I won't buy warranty on most stuff other than certain big items. like the router I would not even consider it. BUT how ever if I am going to be paying $500 on something. And that something is something that I really want even though I KNOW it have all kinds of problems, yea I am willing to fork over $50. Especially if it means I don't have to deal with much crap other than just go in and get a new system.

To me the $50 is worth for me not dealing with the hassle of course this is different for everyone, some people don't mind rather keep the cash.

I can't comment directly on the XBOX 360, but if those are console warranties generally available at the store, they seem very expensive to me.

Does anyone know what the various console makers charge for repair of consoles which are out of warranty?

Well before M$ extended the warranty for the 360 they were charging 50 dollars for extended warranty.

I would gladly well I did pay the extra $10 if all I had to was take back my defective 360 and get it replaced with new one. Instead calling M$ joke of a support team then waiting for the shipping box to arrive then wait 3 months for them to possibly send me back a refurb system.

Now I agree with War Child unless it's over $500 or a very sensitive item like the 360 I normally wouldn't buy the store warranty.

But I have to say it felt great to be able to return my 1 yr old defective 360 and walk out 10mins later with a brand new one.

Is your older warranty better than described in the OP? I'm wondering if Circuit City or Best Buy decided to limit extended warranty coverage?

I'd also like to know, how Sony will handle any service necessary on a PS3, if it is out of the warranty period?

Microsoft's extra 2 yr warranty is $59.99 .. I believe.

Remember the 3yr Warranty part is only covers the RROD , everything else is 1 yr on the 360.

- You can renew your plan after the 2 years is up for the same price. But if you have already had the console replaced in the first 2 years, you still cannot get it replaced again.

That isn't how it was explained to me.

When I picked up my HDMI Premium a week before H3 was released cuz my previous one gave me RROD and I had to ship it off to MS for repair they tried to sell me the PRP for it. The cashier told me that I could swap it out multiple times as needed during the first year while it was still under the manufactures warranty. After the first year...then I would get a one time replacement and no more without buying another Product Replacement Plan(PRP). I asked her if I had to get it now. She said no I had 30 days to get it. So I said I would be back. After about the 3rd week with MS having no idea where my repair console was I was contemplating getting the PRP so in the future I wouldn't have to deal with MS should something go wrong. I could just go to the store and swap it out and done. So I called up their Customer Service and asked them about the PRP for the 360. He told me the same thing. So I decided to get it when I was going to pick up a new PSU for a PC I was working on. I was in line and I asked the cashier about it she then repeated what the others had said. Then I realized I left my receipt in my car so I said I would come back and get it. I went to my car and then just went to the customer service counter and had him tell me what it covered. Which was the same as the others had said. Then made it a point to have him clarify that it was multiple swaps the first year. Then later that night I was looking over the receipt and I noticed that it said I had bought a Product Service Plan (PSP) and not a PRP. So I called customer service about it and the guy told me they only sell a PRP for the 360 and even though it says PSP I actually have a PRP. Then he also repeated the same terms as all the others had. Needless to say I have all the names of the people I talked to about it. Maybe it has changed since then but that is what I was told by 5 separate employees. One way or another they will give it to me if needed. Though I am not the type to swap anything in unless it is actually defective unlike some who used it to upgrade their old consoles to newer ones without them even being broken. Since it ended up taking MS almost two months to get my refurb unit back to me, I like the idea of being able to go into the store with a broken console and walk out with a new one that same day.
