Khao Lak's new surf town and exciting developments (2025)

The newly launched Matalay Integrated Resort Town is an ambitious 1,000-rai (400-acre) development project aimed at transforming Khao Lak in Phang Nga Province into a premier tourism destination. The name “Matalay,” meaning “come to the sea,” reflects the resort’s vision of creating a comprehensive town featuring luxury accommodations, recreational facilities, and entertainment options designed to attract both domestic and international tourists.

Led by Thailand’s Boonsoong family, the project is overseen by former JLL executive Mike Batchelor and Hospitality Capital Advisers. Renowned design group Gensler has developed a forward-thinking master plan, incorporating biophilic design elements by Chiangmai Life Architects and Construction, as well as an art park cultural feature by Boonserm Premthada and Bangkok Project Studio.

The development is strategically planned to harmonise with the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. It embraces the iconic Memories beach surf location, creating an inspired surf village along the oceanfront. By integrating sustainable practices and fostering community engagement, the Matalay Integrated Resort Town aspires to boost local employment and stimulate economic growth.

Upon completion, it is expected to significantly enhance Khao Lak’s appeal, offering visitors a diverse range of experiences in a thoughtfully designed environment. The project is already underway.

For travellers who haven’t visited Khao Lak in a while, the newly constructed four-lane highway from Phuket makes the journey much quicker and more convenient. One of my favourite spots is Delicacy Khao Lak Bakery, a hidden gem for anyone who loves great food. They offer a wide range of handcrafted baked goods, from naturally fermented sourdough to buttery pastries and indulgent cakes that always hit the spot.

It’s the perfect place to grab a freshly baked pastry and enjoy a delicious brunch. For lunch, they serve hearty dishes, wood-fired pizzas, and their homemade sourdough, which never fails to impress. In the evening, the bakery transforms into a cosy spot for dinner, offering a relaxing atmosphere and mouthwatering à la carte options. It’s definitely a place I keep coming back to.

As for the trip back from Khao Lak to Phuket, I’ve visited 076 Cafe in Thai Mueang several times, and it never fails to impress with its authentic Southern Thai flavours. The cafe truly captures the essence of Southern Thai cuisine, with dishes that are bold, flavourful, and comforting.

I always look forward to the rich curries, especially the Massaman, and local dishes like khao yum (Southern Thai rice salad) and roti with curry. The combination of fresh herbs, spices, and the perfect balance of sweet, sour, and spicy makes each bite a delightful experience. The relaxed, casual vibe of the place feels like a true reflection of Southern Thailand—laid-back yet full of flavour.

Khao Lak is really coming into its own, with a perfect mix of nature, culture, and exciting new developments, making it a place that’s easy to fall in love with, whether you’re here for a quiet getaway or an adventurous escape.
