Luna Lauren Velez & Rob Yang Tease "Complicated" Storylines In American Rust Season 2 (2024)

Based on the novel by Philipp Meyer, the second season of American Rust, titled "Broken Justice," will premiere on Prime Video on March 28. The show picks up months after the events of the season 1 finale and introduces Luna Lauren Velez's (Dexter) character, Detective Angela Burgos. While Velez remains tight-lipped about her character's arc, she teases that Angela's partnership with Del creates a complicated storyline.

Among the list of returning actors is Rob Yang (Succession), who portrays Steve Park. Steve displayed his loyalty to Del during the first season of the series, but Yang teases a different dynamic for the police officers in upcoming episodes. With Del covering up a series of crimes, the two will likely find themselves on opposite sides of the law.

Luna Lauren Velez and Rob Yang chat with Screen Rant about the introduction of Detective Angela Burgos and the tension between Steve and Del in American Rust season 2.

Season 2 Will Explore The Lives Of Old And New Characters

Screen Rant: Luna, you've joined the cast as a detective, so what can you share about your character and how she'll play into this complicated situation the characters are in?

Luna Lauren Velez: I can share that she is a detective for Pittsburgh PD, and she is partnered with Del Harris, and that develops a complicated storyline. It's exciting, not only because the characters are so interesting, but working with Jeff was really wonderful. He's an exceptional actor. It's pretty cool. Unfortunately, there's not a lot I can share, but I just can't wait for people to see this. I can't wait for people to see what unfolds.

Rob, Park has always been very loyal to Del. Could there be some conflict between them in season 2 given everything that Del is trying to cover up?

Rob Yang: Yeah, the eggs have been cracked, and it's time to throw them away or make some omelets. It's exciting. He's been really let down by Del to launch the story into the second season. The mighty fall hard. I also can't spoil anything, but there are some pretty surprising things, even to me, when I read it.

With this large cast of characters and so much happening in season 1, we didn't get to dive too much into Park's personal life. Might we learn more about him in season 2?

Rob Yang: Yeah, you really get to see Steve outside of the station when he doesn't have his uniform on and that's exciting. He's interesting is what I can say.

Velez And Yang Were Both Surprised By Season 1's Final Twist

When you first read or watched the season 1 finale, what surprised you each the most? What questions were you most looking forward to having answered?

Luna Lauren Velez: As a viewer, for me, it was when Isaac came to the precinct and showed Del the wrench. I was like, "What?" My head exploded. I was like, "What is happening?" That was pretty huge to me.

Rob Yang: It's like watching a horror movie where you're like, "No, don't do that. What are you doing? Don't go in there." I think at the end of season 1, I was like, "How's he going to get out of this?" because everyone's onto him.

Can you each describe your character in season 2 in three words?

Luna Lauren Velez: Loyal, smart, and determined.

Rob Yang: Dog without a leash.

That's four words, but so perfect!

Luna Lauren Velez: It's an article, so I feel like you can get away with it.

Rob Yang: You can put little hyphens.

American Rust: Broken Justice takes us back to the fictional small town of Buell, Pennsylvania. Del Harris (Daniels) and Grace Poe (Tierney) try to rebuild their lives after the harrowing events of Season One.
