A former Air Force intelligence officer, Summer Worden, has pleaded guilty to making false statements to a federal agent. The charge stems from allegations she made against her estranged wife, NASA astronaut Anne McClain, claiming McClain illegally accessed her bank account while serving a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Yes, you read that right – from space! McClain, a U.S. Army Colonel and seasoned astronaut, recently commanded the SpaceX Crew-10 mission to the Space Station, returning to Earth just this past August.
Worden's guilty plea, entered on Thursday, comes more than five years after the initial indictment. The case, which has captivated imaginations worldwide due to its unusual circumstances, had been scheduled for trial next Monday in a Houston federal court. Worden, a resident of Kansas, was accused of lying to both NASA's Office of Inspector General and the Federal Trade Commission regarding McClain's alleged actions. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas stated that Worden claimed McClain had guessed her password and illicitly accessed her bank account while deployed on the ISS.
And this is the part most people miss: the investigation revealed a much different story. Prosecutors presented evidence showing that Worden herself had opened the disputed bank account back in April 2018. Moreover, both Worden and McClain had accessed the account until January 2019, at which point Worden changed the login credentials. Even more damning, the investigation uncovered that Worden had granted McClain access to her bank records, including login details, dating back to at least 2015. So why the sudden accusation?
McClain's attorney, speaking to The New York Times back in 2019, explained that McClain had checked the account to monitor the family's finances, a practice she had engaged in previously. Critically, McClain maintained that Worden had never told her she was no longer authorized to access the account. It's important to remember that McClain was aboard the International Space Station from December 2018 through June 2019, a period of intense focus and demanding work.
Worden, currently free on bond, is scheduled for sentencing on February 12th. She faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison.
