Who killed ace?
Akainu's magma hands ended up going straight through Ace's chest, killing him right before Luffy's eyes.
Garp not rescuing Ace is not a matter of lacking strength, as proven in recent chapters of One Piece. The true reason why Garp couldn't save Ace is his affiliation with the Marines, which is also his defining characteristic. He has devoted his entire life to serving the organization and upholding its values.
When Ace's attack backfired on him, Akainu revealed that his magma can easily overpower his fire and that is how he was able to injure Ace. He said that both Ace and Luffy should be executed because of who their parents were.
Who Killed Ace in One Piece? After Ace was freed, Marine Admiral Akainu turned his rage on Luffy, but Ace stepped into the line of Akainu's magma fist to protect his brother. Luffy ducked right in front of Ace, watching as the fist punched through Ace's chest.
It gave Blackbeard his power, showed off how awful Akainu is. It gave Luffy the ability to reflect on his past in a flashback which introduced us to Sabo, how Luffy got strong, etc. It showed that if you pursue your dream, even if you die, you have a happy ending, this is a theme in One Piece.
With that, his Vivre Card burns completely and a flashback of his mother is shown naming him Gol D. Ace. Both Whitebeard and Garp start to cry. In the final scene, Ace dies in front of Luffy's lap, leaving Luffy alone with a tormented expression on his face, and spelling the end for the Gol D.
In fact, after Akainu killed Ace, Garp was more than willing to kill him in revenge, and the only reason he didn't follow through was because he was restrained by Sengoku.
Even though I've been good for nothing my whole life, even though I have the blood of a demon within me... You guys still loved me! Thank you so much!! - Ace's last words to his family and friends.
Others propose that Akainu lived on a peaceful island, until pirates terrorized his home, killing his loved ones in the process. Whatever the event or circ*mstance was, it forever altered Akainu's perspective of justice. Resulting in a black & white viewpoint of good and evil, with pirates forever being the villains.
The Admiral Akainu is one of One Piece's most terrifying threats and his name perfectly demonstrates why he is such a scary antagonist. Akainu is already a terrifying villain, but one detail about his name perfectly shows why he is One Piece's scariest enemy.
Will Shanks die?
The only main character that can die is Shanks. This death won't come out of the blue either. Shanks has had death flags on him ever since he confronted Blackbeard for the very first time. This meeting left him with three scars running across his face and, to this day, he knows that this scar aches.
It wouldn't be the first time a Western adaptation has changed the source material of a beloved franchise just to make it more "palatable" somehow for Western audiences, but Iñaki Godoy's Luffy appears to be just as asexual as his anime counterpart.
When Ace noticed that Akainu is going for Luffy's head, he threw himself in front of Luffy to protect his younger brother. This resulted in Akainu's magma hands piercing the chest of our beloved Ace and ultimately killing him. Admiral Akainu then went on to become the most hated character in the One Piece series.
The only way a character within the One Piece universe could be revived is through the use of Brook's Devil Fruit, the Yomi Yomi no Mi. This, however, would be impossible for Ace as he would have had to consumed the Devil Fruit prior to his death for it to have the desired effect.

Ace started his journey three years before Luffy and died at the age of 20, a year older than Luffy is currently. This shows just how much Ace failed to live up to his potential, especially considering his father was one of the strongest Haki users in the series.
One of the most emotional moments in the series is when Luffy's adopted brother, Ace, dies in his arms. As Luffy watches Ace take his last breath, he breaks down in tears, unable to believe what has happened. In the anime "One Piece," after the death of his brother Ace, Luffy does experience intense grief and sadness, but there is no specific mention of him having nightmares about Ace.
One Piece's Garp Couldn't Save Ace Because of Luffy
Garp's loyalty to the Marines may have outweighed his love for one adoptive grandson, but that loyalty was shaken by Luffy's arrival because he wasn't prepared to lose two grandsons that day.
Even though he is past his prime, Garp has shown that he could injure Marco. He was also confident that he could have killed Akainu at Marineford. So, it would be fair to presume that Garp can still take down the current Fleet Admiral.
Does Garp apologize to Luffy?
Garp apologizes for the change in situation, since he said previously he would let Luffy leave Water 7, but does say he will take care of the matter by himself.

Ace's tattoo is ASCE where S has been cut out with X. A means his own name Ace. S means Sabo, his sworn brother. But S was cut off because Sabo was presumed to be dead.
The "S" crossed out on Ace's tattoo is a tribute to Sabo because that's his jolly roger. If you read the manga sabo sends his brothers a letter and that mark is on the upper left hand corner of the letter.
Ace and Isuka's relationship was similar to Luffy and Smoker's relationship, except on more amicable terms. She attacked Ace and his crew, viewing it as her duty to enforce justice. When she almost drowned, Ace threw her a life preserver, causing her to change her view about him.
