I'm one of the many suckers who shelled out this week for the astonishingly incoherent Pirates of the Carribean flick. Of all the eggregious plotholes contained therein, the biggest was what happened to Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris) after she turned into Calypso and became a 50-foot-tall giant. She's released and filled with great power, and just turns into a bunch of crabs? Or she starts the maelstrom for some reason? Fans are so confused by the botched dialogue and storyline that they've even turned to Yahoo! Answers for help -- one person asks what Calypso said after she became giant (somebody replies, "I could swear she said 'f*ck you all!'," which is sort of the basic message the film delivered to its audience in my opinion).
Another person asks "What happened to Tia Dalma?" and favorites the answer "Tia was set free. And Davy Jones died. So no I don't think they ended up together." Huh? Now I'm even more confused. Davy Jones was already dead! And wasn't he yelling "Calypsoooooooooooooooo!" when he fell into the maelstrom? (The maelstrom was my favorite character in the movie, by the way, because it looked good and had depth.) Meanwhile, over at Rotten Tomatoes, the forum thread called "Davy Jones/Tia Dalma . . . please explain!"says it all. And of course you can find out everything on the LiveJournal Tia Dalma Fan community, where one topic is (of course) Tia/Davy fanfic.
Also, what happened to the subplot where the horribly misused Chow Yun-Fat, playing Captain Sao Feng, decided Elizabeth (Kiera Knightly) was Calysto? That, as they say, is another thread.
